Flash alert – Covid-19 Pandemic in Myanmar: Details of 17 January Cases

Yesterday evening at 20:00 hrs, the MoHS announced that 449 new Covid-19 cases had been identified. Since the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020, 134,318 people have been tested positive to Covid-19 and 2,955 people have died from it. At 19:30 Hrs today, the MoHS released the spatial breakdown of those 449 cases:

After a first occurrence on 15 January, Mandalay Region once again ranks higher than Yangon Region, with 122 new cases reported, i.e. 15,949 cases since March 2020. Yesterday, the main surge took place in Aung Myay Tharzan (+28 cases), Maha Aung Myay (+13 cases) and Chan Aye Tharzan (+12 cases). Chan Aye Tharzan, Aung Myay Tharzan and Maha Aung Myay Townships remain the most-affected areas, with more than 2,400 cases each.
In Yangon Region, 105 new cases were reported, i.e. 86,094 cases since March 2020. Yesterday, the main surge took place in Dagon Myothit (East) (+9 cases), South Okkalapa (+8 cases) and Thingangyun (+6 cases). North Okkalapa and Mingaladon remain the most-affected townships, with more than 5,800 cases each.
