Flash alert – Covid-19 Pandemic in Myanmar: Details of 8 January Cases

Yesterday evening at 20:00 hrs, the MoHS announced that 711 new Covid-19 cases had been identified. Since the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020, 129,483 people have been tested positive to Covid-19 and 2,812 people have died from it.
At 18:00 Hrs today, the MoHS released the spatial breakdown of 696 of those 711 cases. MoHS did not give explanation for 15 missing cases.

In Yangon Region, 223 new cases were reported, i.e. 84,577 cases since March 2020. Yesterday, the main surge took place in Hmawbi (+28 cases), Mingaladon (+18) and North Okkalapa (+18). North Okkalapa and Mingaladon remain the most-affected townships, with more than 5,700 cases each.
In Mandalay Region, 178 new cases were reported, i.e. 14,804 cases since March 2020. Yesterday, the main surge took place in Chan Aye Tharzan (+24 cases), Chan Mya Tharzi (+24) and Aung Myay Tharzan (+22). Chan Aye Tharzan, Aung Myay Tharzan and Maha Aung Myay Townships remain the most-affected areas, with more than 2,300 cases each.
