Flash alert – Covid-19 Pandemic in Myanmar: Details of 4 January Cases

Yesterday evening at 20:00 hrs, the MoHS announced that 590 new Covid-19 cases had been identified in 24 hours i.e. 126,561 cases since the beginning of the second wave, on 16 August. Since the beginning of the pandemic in March, 126,935 people have been contaminated in Myanmar, and a total of 2,744 people have died of Covid-19. At 18:00 Hrs today, the MoHS released the spatial breakdown of those 590 cases:

In Yangon Region, 174 new cases were reported, i.e. 81,846 cases since 16 August. Yesterday, the main surge took place in South Oakpala (+14 cases), Hmawbi (+14 cases) and Hlaingtharyar (+13cases). North Okkalapa and Mingaladon remain the most-affected townships, with more than 5,500 cases each.
In Mandalay Region, 149 new cases were reported, i.e. 13,516 cases since 16 August. Yesterday, the main surge took place in Chan Mya Tharzi (+30 cases), Maha Aung Myay (+22 cases) and Patheinkyi (+18 cases). Chan Aye Tharzan, Aung Myay Tharzan and Maha Aung Myay Townships remain the most-affected areas, with more than 2,000 cases each.
