Flash alert: Stay-at-Home and flights updates

Tuesday 29 December, 2020

On 26 December, we reported that Stay-at-Home orders were lifted in Yangon Region, except in Seikyikanaunto, Twantay and Kungyangon Townships. This information came from official sources. However, after a confusing series of corrections widely criticized by Myanmar media, the reality actually appears to be very different: Stay-at-Home orders remain enforced in all the townships of Yangon Region, except in some wards and village tracts of Seikyikanaunto, Twantay and Kungyangon Townships, where orders have been relaxed. This updated situation was confirmed to us during our phone enquiries with the Yangon Region’s Chief Minister’s office. This is not the first time Myanmar authorities are criticized for inaccurate information and confusing wording. This latest episode is probably the most striking one.

For flights, the updates are the following:

  • In Mandalay Region, passengers testified they experienced difficulties getting tested. We suggest our clients to take ample time to enquire beforehand.
  • MNA and Golden Myanmar Airlines are operating normally; Mann Yadanarpon Airlines will resume its flights progressively between 30 December and 15 January; MAI will resume its flight on 15 January, in codeshare with Air KBZ.
  • For international flights, the Department of Civil Aviation was supposed to release clear guidelines on 28 December, but it has not happened yet. When we contacted the DCA, we were told that more instructions from the government is yet to come. All the airlines we called also stated they are waiting for official guidance. More updates should be provided in the near future.
